After many months of thought, Rick Terry came up with what might be the most time saving, money saving, and functional tool for the Thunderjet racer. How many of us have wormed through hundreds of chassis just to find that one good one that was properly aligned? How many times have we set a chassis down, only to have it "milk stool" on three wheels, because the axle holes were drilled improperly, or the chassis was warped? This tool cures a lot of those ills.
In our experiment, we set up a brand new chassis that we knew to be out of line. If you slide the chassis back and forth, you will feel a "click" where it binds. We placed the chassis, fully submerged, into a small covered pot. Make certain the water does not boil away to uncover the chassis, at any time. We boiled for 10 minutes, and then set the whole pot in the sink, in an inch of water, and let it cool to room temperature.
We then checked for the "click" again. by sliding the chassis back and forth, and it was gone. Assembly of the chassis proved that the wobble was cured.
A couple things to note. First, use an old pot you get from a thrift store. You can't imagine the amount of gunk that can form, and ruin your good cookware. Use a set of magnets you can waste. The heat knocks some of the gauss out of them. Lastly, do NOT let the water boil off.
