Molded Magnatraction Chassis
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Chris Rolph takes the challenge
You might ask why someone would like a chassis that is molded, over an out of the box chassis from the good old days. That question is not actually hard to answer, after you drive one of these. Let me preface that I only had a chance to test one chassis, and so everything is based on that.

Let's start with the basics - tolerance. I don't think I have ever seen a better fit of parts. Using a gear plate from an Aurora magnatraction, it tucks in perfectly, with none of that rear gear pate "bow". A check of the rest of the chassis, with calipers, indicates it is very reasonably accurate for perpendicular, and dimension, from all angles.

It was time to get it on the track. I used a Parma Turbo, with added resistors, and set it for 65 ohms. The car initially balked, and ran in a jerky motion. With a little investigation, I realized the problem rather quickly. The pickup shoes needed profiling. I was getting contact only on the front edge. A quick adjustment, and off to the races. The car performed flawlessly. One thng of note was how smooth the car ran. It was very controllable.

Chris had the contacts CNC'ed, and the job is excellent. They are spot on accurate.

I think it's important to define the niche for this chassis. Since the tolerances are so accurate, and the wheels are drilled perfectly, so they never "milk stool", as are the motor journals, allowing the motor to run free, this might be the perfect course for anyone racing Magnatractions Series races where anything goes. It would cut down on fishing through countless chassis to find the straightest one.

A couple thngs of note. For the casual user, I prefer the standard "step" pick up shoes. Much easier to get profiled, and more durable. Also, if you plan to run these without a body, be careful. We snapped off the pick up shoe holder in the front (we repaired it).

In His Own Words

The chassis came about when a friend told me I couldnt do it, kind of a Dare!I quickly began working on the chassis mold and tolerances. I found that there were 4 types of Magnatraction chassis made, and I chose the original first design.

When the first few were done and ready, I had a friend of mine to CNC cut the electrical portion of the chassis, which turned out quite nice. I had factory rivets in bulk, so I began to assemble and test the new chassis.

Much to my delight, the chassis performed great, and logged several thousand laps to be exact! When I introduced these chassis at the Chicago show, the response was overwhelming! I sold all I brought(many to some big names in the slot car world!) and took orders to make more! So what began as a dare turned into a lucrative and fun project.I hope you enjoy.
Chris.

The cost will be 35.00 per chassis, assembled and ready to race.

The chassis is silicone molded, with heat resistant materials so as to not melt.
