| "Everything old is new again". That certainly is the case with the newest cars offered by push car giant Playing Mantis, with their new series of Johnny Lightning cars called Thunderjet 500 Slot Cars. A few years ago PM came out with two series of pull back cars that mounted to the old Aurora Thunderjet and A/fx series cars from the 60' and 70's. The first series, though very popular, lacked a little in the color options, with lime green, pink, and purple being the staple colors. But oh that second series. The color choices and paint jobs both improved, and the HO world of slots went crazy for the new styles. Building on that, and the current craze for anything T-jets, the company has introduced a powered chassis to place under those bodies, and they wisely chose to go with the nostalgia thing again, and came up with a reworked Tuff Ones pancake motor. Totally playing off the old Aurora marketing scheme, these cars come in beautifully detailed boxes and display cards, for the dealers. Their own literature repeats the mantras of years past, stating how the cars are "The closest thing to real racing", and "Realistic Drift Action...", and of course "You remember them from your youth...". The chassis run well right out of the box. We have some statistics in an extensive test done by Earl Harris, and this weeks Voice has comments from some HOWL members who have done their own studies on the cars. As for the bodies, PM has chosen paint over colored plastic. The paint is very smooth, and shiny, and quite durable. Chrome is excellent. One thing we might suggest is that we see the last of the AC Cobra, at least as the incarnation of that old Aurora body goes. The idea of a police car is interesting. Could there be a functioning mechanism for it in the future? The series is limited. Each car will only have 3000 units, with the exception of the metallic blue GS, which will have 2500, and 500 more in a pearl white version. The first series has already sold out to dealers, and a second one is expected soon, with body styles "mostly" the same (that implies at least ONE new style), and different color schemes. Note: The cars come with an extra guide pin, but as noted by the company, both are too short. A fix is in the works. | ||||||||||||
