New Jersey Shootout - October 2002

Drivers Meeting
The day began early with me getting there around 7:15 AM on Saturday morning. Kevin pulled up a few minutes later. We talked while we were waiting for the proprietor of the Go Cart Speedway? to arrive.

Once inside, I saw that the VHORS gang had set up 4 tracks for the days racing. There were 2 rooms off to the side that were used for the pits? and for the vendors. There was little time for renewing acquaintances before Kevin had the drivers meeting and the racing began. I tried to get as many photos as I could without interfering with the racing, though I know at least once the start was delayed so I could get a photo of the cars.

I was very impressed with the driving (but then again, I can't even keep a magnet car on the track). All of the heats I watched seemed very close In between the racing and the tuning, Tom Bowman had his Bat Jets? and various parts, Steve Street had Nurora, Johnny Lightning and Bat Jets as well as chassis and many parts and Ed Penland had a supply of MEV, Fandango, Big Roy's and Road Race Replica bodies and some Radical Decals available for sale. It was nice to see people that I haven't seen since the last shootout, and to meet even more. I had to leave around 4 PM. I wish I could have stayed til the end for the awards.

Race Tidbits

A few tidbits to add to the story

Team California showed up with the "Father of the Fray" Rick Phyllis as
their Team Captain. They only used ONE car for the entire team race

Team Kentucky had only one person from Kentucky!

Team Bigstuff placed the same as they did last year.

Dylan Chesney was the youngest racer in the history of the Shoot-Out
to participate in the Individuals.

The location for the Shoot-Out, the Go-Kart Speedway, is home to small
scale dirt modified slider racing and a huge 1/24 scale tri-oval.

The day of racing lasted over 12 hours.

Team Bigstuff had the best looking coordinated Team cars!

Team Bigstuff was also the Rules Committee.

Three of the tracks that were used had not been used for a VHORS event
prior to the race!

It was Team Nostalgia's first appearance at the Shoot-Out.

Team Tuff Ones had the same roster as last year, and were the only
team to do that.

- Team Volare' was possibly missed the most. We all wanted to hear the
haunting "Voooollaarre'" chant.
