Well the JJ Memorial Shoot Out has come and gone.
Nearly fifty racers from Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia gathered at the Cinnaminson, NJ Community Center on October 14th and 15th for some intense T-jet racing.
Set up began late Friday afternoon. There were quite a few shocked faces as racers walked into the room and saw the big orange original Aurora tub track, which was brought down by Henry Harnish. I think all the racers truly appreciated racing on that piece of history.
Saturday, racers began to show up a little before the official opening time of 8 Am. Racers were eager to get in practice laps. Practice ran smoothly and qualifying for the individual event began shortly afternoon.
When qualifying was finished racers were sent to the tub track and the fast wizzard track to run 2 minute heats. Total laps and sections determined the winner. On the Wizzard track Steve Ward beat Henry Harnish by 2 laps. With Don Royal in third, down another lap and Mike Briggs down another lap. And rounding out the top 5 was DCM’s ace James Tindall.
Next was the results form the tub track. Again, Steve ward was the top man by 2 laps but this time it was Kevin “Big Mac” McEvoy was in second. Mike Briggs was third and Henry was fourth. It should be noted that second through fourth were all on the same lap separated by 20 sections. Don Royal rounds out the top 5.
The winners for the totals from both tracks are Steve Ward, Mike Briggs, Henry Harnish and Don Royal.

There was also a third event run on Octorara Mole Hills (John YenSid Forlino’s) layout. This was an IORC event with Willys bodies and Model Motoring hubs and wheels all around. For those not familiar with IROC, the format is the car stays in the lane and the driver races the car in that lane. I believe the cars where prepared by Mike Briggs. The format was 10 lap heats with points awarded as follows 4 for first, 3 for second, 2 for third and 1 for fourth.
No one ran the table, which just goes to show the level of competition. All ties were broken with the fastest qualifying time for the individual event.
Joerinn was the winner with Scott Keck second, after a narrow win over Chris Kohl in the last heat. Third place went to Jeff Harker and Dave “Bigstuff” Pena finished fourth.
That finished up Saturday’s racing.
Sunday morning’s Team event pitted 10 teams against each other on 5 tracks. At the lunch break there were 4 undefeated teams, Fandango, Tie Dye, NY NJ and DCM.
After lunch the racing became more furious as the undefeated teams had to match driving skills. When the dust settled there was only 1 undefeated team. I believe that this year was the closet racing between first and second place. The battle was decided by 2 points. For the third year in a row Team Fandango emerged victorious.
Team NY NJ finished second followed by Team Tye Dye.
As the tech committee went about their business, goody bags were distributed. And THANKS to all our sponsors there was plenty to go around. Everyone received a John “YenSid” Forlino custom painted Model Motoring Camaro and participants pit box plaque. Plaques were presented to the winners. A lot of handshakes and well wishes and the cleanup began. Bt 7 PM the Cinnaminson Community Center was back to normal.
