Race 3 of 5 and Series Points
Race #3 of the 4th annual T.R.A.C.K. series was held at Dave “Cletusjud” Smith’s Kentucky Speedway on Saturday March 19th. Sixteen racers came to race Aurora Thunderjets on Dave’s newly rebuilt 4-lane scenic Tomy road course.
After the pre-race meeting and invocation there was a special prize given for the racer who drove the farthest to get to the race. The prize, a beautiful X-Traction chrome Nissan Skyline, was won by Randy Dunaway from Morehead Kentucky, who drove 1.5 hours to get to the race.
We also welcomed 4 new members, 2 of whom were racing with us for the 1st time and 2 second time racers. These were Brad Head, Brian Devore, Austin Head and Benny Renner. In addition Jon K. brought a specially decorated “race cake” and Scotty Reis brought a pot of chili and a seafood salad. Add hot dogs and other snacks provided by Cletusjud and nobody went hungry to say the least.
To the racing: First up was stock T-Jets, American sedan bodies. In qualifying it was Steve Hall in his JL Camaro with the fastest lap grabbing the track record and 5 bonus points. Tim Pennix in another JL Camaro qualified a close 2nd with Dave Smith 3rd with his Hemi something or other (sorry Dave). Tim Pennix went on to win the race by a few sections over Greg Carpenter (JL ’70 Chevelle) with Steve Hall in 3rd only a lap and a half behind after 65 laps. Tim’s son Tim Jr., and Scotty Reis rounded out the top 5. Jon Kropczynski finished only a few sections behind Scotty with his smooth running MEV Corvair. For all the stats on this race visit our website’s scoring page http://www.thunderjetracing.com/scores.htm Click on “stats” or “series points” at the bottom.
In VHORS super-stock again it was Steve Hall setting the new track record with a 1st place qualifying lap. Qualifying 2nd, 3rd and 4th were Dave Smith, Greg Carpenter and Tim Pennix. This set up the group of 4 to go against each other in the last grouping. As might be expected these 4 took the top 4 positions in the race as well but in a slightly different order. Greg C. pulled off the win followed closely by Dave Smith, Tim Pennix and Steve Hall. Each of the 4 top positions was separated by one lap. As far as bodies it was Fandango in 1st and 2nd (Lola and Mustang) and BRP in 3rd (Ferrari GT) All the stats on this one can be found on our website as well.
In the series points it remains a close battle for at least the top 12 positions. Greg C. holds the top position for the moment in both classes but it’s too early to say who might win the series. With 2 races to go, one at GrandSport and the last race at Kentucky Speedway it will be exciting. I can’t wait to host the next race on April 9th. Practice will be Sunday April 3rd at 6:00 p.m. If anyone needs directions to my track or any other information about our T-Jet racing just let me know.
