| Race 4 of 5: Thunderjet Racing Association of Central Kentucky
April 17th, 2004
Well it seems the ‘04 T.R.A.C.K. series is flying by faster than a hopped up T-Jet on a twelve foot straightaway. Race 4 was held Saturday April 17th at Dave “Cletusjud” Smith’s Kentucky Speedway in Georgetown. Nineteen racers showed up on a beautiful spring day in the Bluegrass to race stock and super-stock T-Jets. Racing at Dave’s place is always special, making you feel at home moving from the racing room to the kitchen (my favorite place) to the living room and outside onto the patio where a small 4-lane oval “door track” was set up for practice laps alongside the comfortable lawn furniture. It’s the perfect setting to relax and enjoy the good company of other racers.
For this event we were pleased to welcome 3 first time TRACK series racers Alan VanDoren of Seymour Indiana, Randy Wickam from southeastern Ohio and Scott Reis from Flemingsburg Kentucky. It was also our pleasure to again welcome Bob Wurdack and Dave Huddle from Columbus, Ohio who have become regulars with us. Others traveling a distance to race with us were Tom O’Riley, Bobby Williamson, David Burris, Randy Dunaway, Steve Hall, Erick Wright and Dave Morrison who have also become regular racers with the group. A special thank you is in order for Dave Morrison who again helped us out with score keeping on his lap-top computer, Jon’s wife Carol who baked another beautiful “race cake” and others who contributed food, drinks etc.
While the atmosphere in the house was relaxed and friendly, the competition on the track was intense. Track records were being broken in stock and super-stock by the one-man wrecking crew of the day, Tim Pennix, who went on to win both classes. Tim outclassed the field in stock, finishing 2 laps ahead of 2nd place Bobby Williamson who had won the last 2 stock races of the series. Watching Tim’s MEV 71 Chevy pickup zipping around the track to victory was a sight to behold. Clinching his 2nd win of the series Tim put himself within striking distance of the top 2 for the stock class championship. Tom O’Riley showed he could overcome a poor qualifying run (16th), finishing 3rd only 6 track sections behind his good friend and “team mate” Bobby Williamson. Greg Carpenter and Dave Smith rounded out the top 5. Top ten in stock were:
In super-stock the top 3 qualifiers finished 1, 2 and 3 with last year’s champ Tim Pennix surpassing the field to take his first super-stock win of the season. Tom O’Riley, Greg Carpenter, Bobby Williamson and Bob Wurdack finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Racing was close throughout the field. Tom O’Riley again displayed great poise after a slow push start in the first heat put him behind. Bearing down in the following heats he pressed his Lola past two other cars to take 2nd place giving him the points he needed to comfortably wrap up the super-stock championship with one race to go. Top ten in super-stock were:
It was nice to see such a good turnout at the Kentucky Speedway.
