Thunderhills Raceway -A Long Island Treasure

An Overview of Thunder Hills
The track is in my buddie's parents' basement here on Long Island. No more than 20 minutes car ride from the old building in West Hempstead where Aurora made the great little cars we all still love.

Former Long Islander, and Aurora fanatic and show promoter, Bob Beers, has told me has contacted the owners of that building several times about using it for slot car shows, but they never return his calls. I think the building is being partially used, but not all of it.

Four years ago, just as the Internet was catching on, I became aware of a hobby shop that was the next town over from the old Aurora plant. I used to work in the area, so my friend and I would go to the store on our lunch hour to buy T-jets. You see, he still had hundreds of them for sale. He had a lot of stuff!

Well, after about two years, he sold almost all of it! Once people became aware of what he had, and the internet spread the word and interest, he sold almost all of it except for some very common stuff. acquired most of my collection through him. It really reminded me of when I was a kid and would ride my bike into town to go to this one hobby shop that was an Aurora dealer. It was great to just look at the cars in the glass cases (he was also a coin dealer). So it was fun to go buy T-jets from a case once again.

Too bad, my freind moved about 40 miles away, and I don't get to run at Thunderhills very often anymore. It makes a big difference when you run on a layout that is as scenic as Thunder Hills - it makes the whole expericence better.
