| Keester's Speedway is a four-lane, slot car road course. It is made from Tomy track supported by a 3/8" plywood base. Elevation changes are accomplished using risers. The railroad is made of Atlas nickel flex track nailed to a cork roadbed supported by 1 1/2" white foam beadboard. The switches are made by Peco. There are no elevation changes on the railroad. The entire layout measures 15 feet long by 5 feet wide. The slot car track takes up a 4 foot by 12 foot rectangle in the center of the layout. The railroad occupies the remaining space. | ||||||||||||||||||
| The layout was designed to be portable. It consists of three modules that bolt together. The end modules are supported by a leg assembly. The center module is supported by the end modules. The bench construction technique I used is known as L-girder. The L-girder is the foundation of the benchwork. I used 1"x3"s for mine. You lay one board flat and attach the other one perpindicular to it forming an "L". Flip the "L" over and this forms the base for the support beams. The support beams (1"x2"s), in turn, provide the base for the plywood, risers and foamboard. This allowed me to use a cookie cutter approach to cut out my plywood pieces. In the future I will use either 1/2" or 3/4" plywood. The 3/8" plywood is hard to keep flat. | ||||||||||||||||||
