| In a previous article I mentioned that I was racing with two different groups in the Cincinnati area. One of those groups races on a 90' 2" AFX track affectionately known as "Motorcraft Speedway." This group, hosted by the irascible Dan Varney, has been racing together with various changes in participants for better than ten years now and is still going strong. Because this track fairly fills up the basement room it occupies, by necessity the number of racers has to be restricted somewhat and that's why it was never expanded past it's present two lanes. Power for this all-banked, T-shaped layout is provided by multi-power packs which is sufficient for the modified Super G+ cars we race. The group races on a bi-weekly basis, using a modified crash and burn format. The heats are usually 20 laps and timing is provided by a Japanese prototype AFX "grandstand" timer/counter. The majority of the track is laid out at the edge of the table which allows a tremendous amount of room for infield detailing. Until around seven years ago, the track featured an intersection which resulted in spectacular crashes and many lost chassis. Since it's replacement with overpasses, the track has been refurbished several times, most recently in the past month with new blacktop laid down(cork) and new building construction. Many of the sections of the display area of the track were actually developed before manufacturers versions, i.e. the pit lane with pit crew. All of the racers have their own teams, colors and race shops. When it comes to detailing, these racers allow their imaginations free rein on occasion and some of the track scenery over the years has included: Current track features include: I am the newest addition to this small group of HO racers and from the first day I saw the track, I was extremely impressed by the time, effort and attention to detail, along with a great sense of humor, that these guys have devoted to making this a great place to race! | |||||||||||
