Bag of Parts Race -KC Racing is hot!

One Helluva race last nite!

MAHOR set a new all-time race attendance record of TWENTY-NINE drivers! That's right, no typo, 29. WOW! A special thanks to Howard and Susie Kilgore for the hard work in clearing their basement for the expected crowd. We did need the room. The race was our club's third annual Bag-of-Parts race whereby drivers draw a number that corresponds to a numbered bag containing a disassembled chassis as well as their qualifying spot, and have just 30 minutes to assemble it and get it ready to race. The rules are simple: all chassis parts inthe bag must be used with exception of the brushes and tires. The wheels cannot be extended outward and no lapping of the geartrain is allowed. JL bodies were the only ones permitted. This makes for some interesting and FUN racing, and last night was no exception.

Everyone started arriving between 3 and 4 PM and chassis building commenced at 5. 30 minutes later, everyone was ready to go. A 2-minute tweak-in period followed for each driver in groups of four to allow everyone to test their cars to make sure everything was running right. But you had to run what you drew for a chassis and deal with it, and in my case it was a "leave well enough alone" that I didn't leave alone! After a brush spring "tweak", my Bag-of-Puke ran like a self-propelled lawnmower dragging a refrigerator. What a PIECE OF @#$%!!!

Ah, I feel better now. Anyway, the racing got started with qualifying based on the number each driver pulled. It was interesting to see who lucked into the hot motors and/or built their beasts to their optimum potential. Dave Carter and Don Royal had some serious horses under their hoods, and drove well. Steve Godinez had both power and handling, and Malcolm McIntyre had both in excess, taking THIRD place FROM THE C MAIN! Way to go! Don Bourne managed to stave off big "Mac" and chase Weasel Ward around the track in the A-main and grab 2nd. But, once again, the field was Weasel-whipped by a Gran Sport driven by Steve Ward. This guy can win with ANYTHING. Putting on a clinic for horsepower and handling, Ward drove like a maniac throughout the A-main, falling back behind Bourne and Godinez twice early on, only to come back each time and slip by; the second time for good as neither saw Ward's tailights again the rest of the race. Hats off to Steve Ward: BOP CHAMP!

The latest race results can be found on the club website as usual. Go to:

A very special thanks goes out to John Balson for sending us two dozen Thunderbrushes for raffle prizes and to Jon Kittleson of Sports Collectibles for donating two SC T-shirts for raffle as well! Way to go guys!!! The next race will be MAHOR's final summer fling next month at Sports Collectibles: a Corvette Theme Race! Stay tuned, and on the track!
