| About 4 months ago, I started wondering about the Fray. Would I go? Who would I go with? I went last year, for the first time. I had a great weekend in Ferndale, and met as many good folks as racing and “pitting” my cars would allow. I knew I wanted to return. ( I figured, There’s no way our team would have to race on the damn purple track three times again! Bound to do better! ) At the time, the status of our team that went last year was in question. Our team captain was working overseas, and I wasn’t sure if the team was going this year. Around that same time, at one of the weekly races at Shaunadega, Shaun and another regular weekly racer started asking about the Fray. “What’s it like?” “Nothing else! You gotta see it!” “We should start a team!” Well, it was almost that fast. With that, we had three members to form the nucleus of our new team. We figured it would be easy to find 2 or 3 more guys to complete the team. To make a short story shorter, it wasn’t! At one point, we actually had up to 6 guys ready to go, but just recently, we found out that one of them couldn’t make the trip. So now we are back to 5. So here’s a little somethin’ about us… “Rapid” Ron Coaxum Ron is a computer tech at an online marketplace service provider in Mountain View, California. He is a long time H.O. racer of all classes from T-jets to unlimited, and everything in between, and participates in a weekly racing program in San Jose, as well as Nor-Cal USRA every 3rd Saturday of the month. Ron is the current Pro Group 27 Champion in 1/24 scale. This will be his first Fray “Speedway” Ray DeGallery Ray is a calibration tech from Sunnyvale, California. He has been racing slot cars seriously for about 15 years, and also participates in a weekly racing program in San Jose, and at Shaunadega Raceway. Ray has attended numerous national HOPRA / UFHORA events, and has brought home hardware from most of them, including the Nor-Cal / So-Cal events in ’90 and ’91. He has raced everything from Super-Stocks to “Neos”. This will be Ray’s first Fray. Jeff “Hurricane” Hurley Team Captain, and only team member with any Fray experience. A custom painter and graphic artist from Redwood City, California. I have been racing competitively on and off for 25 years although most of it has been limited to Stock or Super stock classes. I was a member of the winning and record breaking Team NSCRC in the 1998 24 hours of Le Mans in Derby, England, winner of the B.I.T.C.H. Races and S.P.A.M. Series at Shaunadega, and winner of the 2nd annual Shaunadega 500 last June in the H( o Y o )TERS Pontiac. This will be my second Fray. Shaun “Shaunadega” Lee Shaun is an Eye Laser Tech at Stanford. He owned a T-jet track when he was 7 years old, and played with it for about a year. In the 70’s he messed around a little with AFX cars. In 1994, Shaun met Ray and Ron while racing at Slot Car City in Mountain View. In 1997, Shaun commissioned Brad Bowman to build a 6 lane, high banked oval H.O. track that became known as Shaunadega Raceway. The rest, as they say, is history! He was also a member of Team NSCRC at the 1998 24 hours of Le Mans in Derby, England. Shaun’s other love for the last 23 years has been riding and racing motocross, and never he turns down a game of cards! This will be his first Fray. Stuart “Spike” Skjerven (Sher-ven) Stuart is a marketing programs manager at Cisco IOS Marketing. He is the owner of the Skjerbergring in San Jose. Stuart has been racing at Shaunadega Raceway for about 2 years and has quickly become one of the premier racers and car builders at the track. He is the founder of the newly formed San Jose Youth Slot Car Organization. The SYSO is a series for both children and adults and is very popular in its early stages. This will be Stuart’s first Fray. We are all looking forward to seeing, meeting, racing and beating you ! | |
