This has allowed me to race others; something that just wasn’t practical for me living a couple of hours from the nearest active racing group. It also allows me to run whatever I want in terms of cars. Since we standardize the times, the class, or even scale, of car doesn’t matter. So I can be competitive with a bone stock car or some custom modified car as well.

I also continue to work on my track layout, car building and other projects as well. That’s one of the reasons I enjoy slotcars so much, I think. I can run in several different tangents and still be within the confines of one hobby.

Fun With Slots—For Me
By Chris Moellering

I re-entered slots last fall at 28. My wife and I had finally moved to a house that could hold the kids, us, and still have some room for me to play around in. I jumped on line and saw the activity going on in slots and was even more fired up. I got the old Model Motoring track from my parent’s attic and set to work.

Within a few weeks I had a track plan and the necessary parts to complete it thanks to the Internet and some members of the HOSCML. I made a table , got it into the basement, and started assembling track. Soon I was running cars again. Just as much fun as I had remembered.

Over the past several months I’ve acquired more cars (I never did find my old ones in my parent’s attic) and have been detailing my layout. I’ve upgraded controllers and power supply and discovered computer timing. This last discovery has probably been the most significant to me in terms of enjoyment of slotcars.

Timing the laps has allowed me to know what car is fast and what car isn’t. It’s inspired me to improve my driving and car tuning skills. It’s also allowed me to literally race other slotters, around the globe.

About February of 2000 I got the idea that this could be done on-line. Bryan Brown had already wrote software to facilitate this so I put up a website and away we went. The Online Racing Series was born. So far we’ve had racers from 3 continents and in both HO and 1/32.
