Jack Lamb Creates his Dream
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
By Jack Lamb

I have been racing slot cars in Kansas City about 10 years. Gene Stephens

lived nearby and invited me over to run Panthers on his track. I was

hooked. I started running Poly Panthers and Patriots on the MOKAN circuit

and did that for several years. I like magnet cars but after playing with a

T-Jet found out that I LOVE T-Jets. About 5 years ago Howard Kilgore gave

me a Ford GT40 stock and I joined MAHOR. I built my first track "Regency

Run" a 4 lane Tomy in the shape of an aircraft carrier. I have raced the

Fray in Ferndale twice, Outhouse in Iowa twice, Daytona Beach, Neils Wheels

in Texas and several other tracks around the US. I am lucky that my job

allows me to visit tracks around the US. My favorite class is Stock T-Jet

that have silicone skinny tires running on twisty road courses. To be 10

years old again and dream you are racing a high powered race car and rule

the world

decided last summer that I would like to build a routed track that would

feel like you were driving on a Ferndale Fray track. Tim Leppert, SmallTime

Racing is a friend of mine and builds routed tracks, I had a starting point.

I worked on several designs and tried to incorporate race characteristics

that were important to me. I wanted to have a track where a good handling

car had an advantage over a bullet. Oh, I forgot, the emphasis is on a track

designed for T-Jets. Tim took my plans and drew them in AutoCad. I had my

design and Tim did a great job of laying out the technical aspects of

tolerances and measurements, the blue print. Tim took my design and routed

exactly as written

My track was built on (2) solid 4x8 sheets of PVC plastic that are laid out

end to end making a 4x16 layout. The track arrived routed to specs in 2

sheets. I then used a Jig saw to cut out places where I would raise and

twist the track. The plastic is very easy to work with. I installed the

rail which takes time but not that hard to do. All of my lanes have built

in color coding

I have a 4 lane road course that is about 80 feet per lane. The rail is

continuous and very smooth. From the Starting Line you drive a 15 foot

straight that turns into a flat sweeping 4 foot wide 360 turn that changes

into 2 Fray S's and makes 2 hard lefts into a 5 foot straight with a hump

followed immediately by a 360 hairpin down a 3 foot straight that snaps hard

right then 2 foot hard left, you are half way, down a 4 foot straight to a

declining radius 360 with a hard snap on the end going down a 2 foot

straight into a sweeping right hander with declining radius that jumps into

a tight FRAY S. that hairpins into another S, just for fun these S's are

built off camber. You now are back to the main straight crossing the finish

line

I have a TrakMate timing system and am very proud of my track. I wanted a

track that could make a T-Jet believe that it was a real Sports Car driving

a real road course. SmallTime Racing delivers an excellent product and you

design your own track. The quality is excellent and I would not hesitate to

build again. Tim supplied everything at a price that is very competitive.

If anyone wants details about SmallTime Racing, Churchill Downs or wants to

come race in Kansas City on my track have them email me.
